A number of residents living in council houses have approached the People Before Profit Alliance in Dundalk regarding what one resident described as a “campaign of scaremongering and intimidation against decent tenants”.
The residents are referring to letters they have received demanding that all council tenants attend “refresher tenancy training programmes”.
In bold red writing the letter also warned tenants that attendance is compulsory and that failure to attend may mean a verbal warning. Residents are up in arms claiming that the councils approach is both strong armed and unnecessary as most residents do keep their gardens and home in good condition.
Finbar Markey from People Before Profit Dundalk said he was shocked by the tone and indiscriminate nature of the letter which requires that all tenants must attend irrespective of their tenancy record. “These refresher courses are an insult to the majority who keep their areas in good order. Residents in Woodview Park have reported to us that inspectors from the council have been taking photographs of their front and back gardens and one resident received a warning letter because some coal had spilled from a coal bag in her back yard. This is completely unacceptable and can only serve to drive a wedge between well meaning tenants and suspicious council authorities. We would like to see and end to this campaign of intimidation”.
Residents from Woodview will be attending the People Before Profit Dundalk public meeting in the Redeemer family resource centre at 8pm on Wednesday night to explain their case to the public and to plan how to address this issue with the council.
